Academic writing skills are essential in order to successfully complete your Bachelor’s degree. While these skills are taught during your degree programme, extra guidance and support are available if you need them.
Academic Literacy Test
All first-year UvA students following a degree programme in English have the option to take a free Academic Literacy Test in their first semester. This test gives you an indication of your academic reading, writing and reasoning skills, and which areas you may still need to work on in order to do well in your studies.
The ALT will be available for online completion in October. All first year students will receive information on how to register in September. The test is available in both Dutch and English, depending on the language of your degree.
Extracurricular writing support
Based on your test scores, you can sign up for free academic writing support offered by the Writing Centre, such as workshops and individual appointments. An overview of the support we offer is available here.
